Ingrown Toenail Treatment

This is a very troublesome and often painful affection. The edges or sides of the nail are disposed to turn down and grow into the flesh, giving rise to inflammation, ulceration, and often great pain and suffering. The best remedy I have ever known in this difficulty is to scrape with some sharp-pointed instrument, as the point of a penknife, a sort of groove or gutter in the center of the nail lengthways from the root to the end. It must be scraped down to near the quick, or as thin as it can be borne. This renders the nail “weak in the back,” so that it will gradually and ultimately turn up at the sides until the edges come above and over the flesh. Continue this as fast as the nail grows out and grows thicker, and you will eventually succeed in getting the nail in its proper shape and position. It will be proper to poultice if there is much inflammation, and also apply healing salve. If ulceration, bathe the part also occasionally with tinctures aloes, myrrh, and opium, equal parts mixed.—Gunn’s Domestic Physician.

some first aid treatment for ingrown toenail that i found in the net that can really help:

     1. Soak the foot in warm water 4 times a day. You do not need to add soap or antibacterial agents to the water. Pharmacies usually carry special soak packs, like Pedi-Boro soak packs or Epsom salt.

     2. Wash the foot including the affected area twice a day with soap and water. Keep the foot clean and dry during the rest of the day.

     3. Do not wear high heels or tight-fitting shoes. Consider wearing sandals, if appropriate, until the condition clears up.

4 Try to lift up the corner of the nail that is digging into the skin. Take a small piece of cotton or gauze and roll it between your fingers to form a small roll or wick. Then place the roll between the nail and the skin to keep it elevated. This is painful but is the most important part of home treatment. After every soaking, try to push the roll a little farther in.

5 You may take a pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.

If you see no improvement within 3 days, call your doctor.
